This is a classic 4-day Sahara Desert Loop Tour departing from and returning to Marrakech. The itinerary efficiently connects the major highlights of Southern Morocco, including the High Atlas Mountains, the ancient fortified villages, the dramatic gorges, and the iconic Erg Chebbi dunes. The return leg (Day 3) is a unique feature, following the historically significant Draa Valley route, which showcases a different, more fertile side of the pre-Saharan landscape before concluding back in the imperial city.
Your adventure begins with an early departure from Marrakech and a spectacular drive over the Tizi n’Tichka Pass (2,260 meters), taking you into the pre-Saharan region. Our first major stop is the legendary, UNESCO World Heritage site of Ait Ben Haddou, a beautifully preserved fortified mud-brick village that has served as a cinematic backdrop for decades.
After exploring this ancient Kasbah, we continue to Ouarzazate, often called the “Hollywood of Africa.” The journey then follows the scenic route dotted with ancient fortresses and dramatic landscapes, leading us to our accommodation in the beautiful Dades Valley for the night.
After a delicious breakfast, we depart from the Dades Valley and journey toward the spectacular Todra Gorges. You will enjoy a walk through this magnificent natural canyon, marveling at the towering, 300 meter-high rock walls.
Our journey continues to the Sahara Desert. Upon arrival in Merzouga, the gateway to the dunes, you’ll be greeted with traditional Moroccan tea. We then embark on an unforgettable camel trek into the heart of the Erg Chebbi dunes. This ride is timed perfectly to witness a mesmerizing sunset over the golden sands.
The evening unfolds at a private desert camp where you’ll enjoy a traditional dinner, listen to rhythmic Berber music around a campfire, and spend the night in a comfortable tent under an incredible blanket of stars.
Wake up for the optional but highly recommended magical desert sunrise. After breakfast at the camp, we begin our scenic route back west towards Ouarzazate, taking a historically significant path.
We will pass through Rissani, an ancient trading town, and continue through traditional Berber villages like Alnif and Nkob, traversing unique pre-Saharan landscapes. The journey then takes us alongside the legendary Draa Valley, a dramatic, vibrant ribbon of green known for its millions of swaying date palms. We arrive in Ouarzazate in the afternoon, where you will check into your hotel for the final night.
After a final Moroccan breakfast, we commence the return journey to Marrakech. Our route once again takes us over the majestic High Atlas Mountains, offering a fresh, west-bound perspective on the scenery that first greeted you.
This full-day, scenic drive provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on the incredible contrasts of your desert, mountain, and valley journey. We anticipate arriving back in Marrakech in the late afternoon, where your memorable tour concludes with a drop-off at your accommodation.
