This is an expertly crafted 10-Day Moroccan Grand Traverse that offers a deep exploration of the country, traveling efficiently from Tangier in the north to Marrakech in the south. The itinerary provides a perfect blend of Imperial City history, unique cultural sites, and dramatic natural landscapes, including the Rif Mountains, the Sahara Desert, the Gorges, and the High Atlas crossing. It is ideal for travelers seeking a comprehensive overview of Morocco’s highlights without needing to loop back.
Your journey begins with a meet-and-greet in Tangier. We drive into the majestic Rif Mountains, arriving at the captivating Chefchaouen, the famous “Blue Pearl” of Morocco. The afternoon is yours to explore its serene, blue-washed streets and tranquil squares at your own pace. Overnight in a local Riad.
Departing Chefchaouen, we travel through picturesque villages to the ancient Roman ruins of Volubilis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Next, we explore the imperial city of Meknes, visiting the grand Bab el-Mansour gate. We arrive in Fes in the evening for an overnight stay in a medina Riad.
An expert local guide leads you through Fes, Morocco’s cultural and spiritual heart. Discover the labyrinthine medina, visiting the Royal Palace, the historic Jewish Quarter (Mellah), the ancient Al-Qarawiyyin University, and the famous Chouara Tanneries. Overnight in Fes.
We journey south today, passing through the alpine-style town of Ifrane and the Cedar Forest of Azrou, where you can see Barbary macaques. After lunch in Midelt, we descend through the lush Ziz Valley oasis, arriving at the edge of the Sahara in Merzouga for the night.
Dedicate today to the Sahara. Visit Khamlia village for a spiritual Gnawa music performance and meet nomadic families. In the afternoon, embark on a camel trek into the Erg Chebbi dunes for a breathtaking sunset. Your night is spent in a desert camp under a blanket of stars.
Wake up for a spectacular sunrise over the Sahara. After breakfast, we journey to the Todra Gorge to walk between its towering cliffs. We then continue to the scenic Dades Valley, famous for its unique “monkey fingers” rock formations, for an overnight stay.
Today’s route follows the legendary “Road of a Thousand Kasbahs.” We travel through the fragrant Valley of Roses and visit the well-preserved Kasbah Amridil in the Skoura Oasis. We arrive in Ouarzazate, the “Hollywood of Africa,” for an overnight stay.
After a potential stop at Ouarzazate’s film studios, we visit the legendary Ksar of Ait Ben Haddou, a UNESCO World Heritage site and famed film location. We then cross the High Atlas Mountains via the dramatic Tizi n’Tichka pass, arriving in the vibrant “Red City” of Marrakech in the afternoon.
A local guide unveils the magic of Marrakech. Explore the opulent Bahia Palace, the historic Saadian Tombs, and the iconic Koutoubia Mosque. Immerse yourself in the electric atmosphere of Jemaa el-Fna square and the bustling souks, and find tranquility in the Majorelle Garden.
